The Molding, Casting and 3D Scanning / Printing Process

Master models are required to begin the creation process. Digital files, sculpted items and found artifacts are the three sources for a master.

This wonderful wolf project by Kristen Douglas-Seitz of The Painted Feather demonstrates a typical process. We began with a clay sculpture sent via courier. Shipping paperwork was handled by me, and using my own background as an accomplished sculptor, minor scuffs were repaired before molding.

The clay model was ultimately cast in wax by me and turned into foundry poured bronzes at her local foundry.  3D scans  were created and the files were sent to the talented Jen Tallman at Tallman3D Arts for slicing and precision scale printing. Those prints were molded and a number of study size casts were produced for Kristen’s students to use as anatomy reference, plus a bonus done in a painted white patina and bronze finish.

Traditional Sculpture and Artifacts

Physical sculptures and found artifacts are prepared bedded with sulfur free clay and prepared to accept the silicone blanket.

Digital Files and 3D Printing

In the case of digital models, prints are often provided by the client when available.

Have files and don’t know how to proceed? For digital sculptors without printing knowledge or equipment, files are supplied directly to my professional printing partners who optimize and produce the physical masters required for molding.

The printed copies are molded in silicone, cast in the final chosen material, and finished to agreed targets.
